Labor Day is NOT the end of the camping season.

OK. So the summer is over and on the fringe of your thoughts is winter weather.  But don't give up on 2010 just yet.  There are still lots of great camping opportunities. And there should be a lot less competition for those really great spots.  Fall brings on some beautiful transitions in our surroundings.  Don't miss out.

You have kids in school?  Check their schedules and look for those free days or half days that you can plan around.  Even these short trips can be a rewarding get away for the family.  Use these shorter trips to test out some equipment enhancements that you have been thinking about.  A new type or larger tent .  Some new cooking gear .  Maybe replacing that old worn out sleeping bag .  Also be prepared for those lower temperatures (finally) with a new jacket .
Stop in and see what we have to offer to make that camping trip more enjoyable at:

IT'S SPRING TIME----GETTING READY FOR CAMPING AND BACKPACKING

WOW!  WHAT A WINTER!

It's that time of year to start preparing for this year's camping and backpacking season.  I pull everything out and set up in the back yard to make sure all is in proper working order, clean and ready for action.  This is also a good time to replace that worn out camping tent, or check to see if any of the family has outgrown their sleeping bags from last year.  I have included a Camping and backpacking checklist  for Camping and Backpacking gear to help you decide if you have considered everything.

If your sleeping bags have been rolled-up all winter, you will want to fluff that insulation back up, for maximum protection during those cool spring nights. The best way to do this is to grab a couple rolls of quarters and head to the local Laundromat.  Follow the directions on the manufacturer’s tag, of course, but it likely recommends to machine wash and tumble dry the bag – unzipped, so the water only has to go through one layer of the bag.The big commercial front load machines at the Laundromat are best, because the sleeping bag can’t get wrapped around a center drum and damaged.

Staying warm dry and comfortable are the base line ingredients to an enjoyable and fun outing.  I have included some suggested quality brand name gear that I believe will enhance that experience.

Winter Warm Weather Hiking

Looking for warm weather for hiking during the winter? Try Tucson Arizona at Romero Canyon. This is a beautiful desert mountain region

.
Trailhead: Romero Canyon
Length: 13.2 miles roundtrip
Difficulty: Moderate
Wilderness Area: Pusch Ridge Wilderness
State Park: Catalina State Park

Directions to Trailhead:From Tucson at Ina & Oracle, take Oracle Road north 6.2 miles, and turn into Catalina State Park. Follow signs to Romero Trailhead. There is a fee to get into the park.
Trail Description:
The first part of this trail is a walk along a wide sandy trail. The sand makes this flat area seem much worse than it should be. After 1/3 mile the trail becomes “normal” and narrows. The trail enters the wilderness and climbs a small ridge before dropping into Romero Canyon.
The trail in this section is difficult to follow and you must look carefully for the cairns. If you get lost, backtrack to the last cairn and look around for the next one.
Once in Romero canyon the trail follows a series of pools that often have water in them. In September 1998 there was lots of water. The trail follows the contour of the canyon as it climbs from desert to riparian to pine trees. After about 2 miles all trace of civilization is removed from the scenery and the solitude is yours to enjoy.
After about 4 miles you enter the upper canyon. Several campsites are available in this area. Water is not as plentiful, but we still found some. The trail continues until it reaches Romero Pass at 6.6 miles. Extended trips are possible from the pass or return the way you came.
This is not a summer hike.

Selecting the Right Sleeping Bag

SLEEPING BAG SELECTION GUIDE
When opening almost any website, it feels like an avalanche of confusing photos and information. Hopefully the following will help you select the right:

MUMMY SLEEPING BAG | CAMPING SLEEPING BAGS | COLEMAN SLEEPING BAGS | NORTH FACE SLEEPING BAGS | CHILDREN'S SLEEPING BAGS | WOMEN'S SLEEPING BAG | GIRLS SLEEPING BAG

Consider the intended use of your Sleeping Bag.
• Camping sleeping bags–comfort vs. size and weight
• backpacking gear–weight and size vs. comfort
Consider the Shape
• Rectangular Sleeping bags provide more space, can be zipped together to form a double bag and may be opened to use as an extra blanket.
• A Mummy Sleeping Bag weighs less, includes a hood to pull tight around your head and the closer fit provides more warmth.
Consider the size
• Sizes vary from large to youth to extra long to extra wide
Consider the Temperature Rating
• Depends on the conditions in which you plan to camp or hike
• A Sleeping Bag temperature rating indicates the temperature at which a person should be comfortable when wearing light PJ’s
• Use of a ground sleeping pad is very important as it provides extra insulation and comfort.
• Note: Some Children's sleeping bags are lots of fun but only a few  typically designed for extreme temperatures.
Consider a Storage Bag or Stuff Pack for maintaining bag life and easy transportation.
